I am one those peoples who likes to "trust my gut," but as I have said before, I am not always reliable...and that's something important to remember, right? I trust myself when my intuition says that something is not safe (because I'd rather be wrong than sorry). But I'm immediately thinking of dozens of times when my intuition was way off!

I do think in the beginning of my recovery intuitive eating as a theory was helpful because I did need that very basic rule of "eat when your body is hungry." But now that I've made strides I rely on that theory less and less. We know that we should eat when hungry and don't rely on simply intuition any more, we've also got to rely on the parts of our educated brain that says brownies are good but so is broccoli.

And you've given yet another book! What am I going to do?? lol

Yes, I completely agree. I do think a big part of my distrust of gut feelings come from being way off about things. It's just the System 1 part of our brains trying to keep us safe, and as you said, better safe than sorry.

It is a really interesting and thought-provoking book but I wouldn't put it on the "you must read this now" list, if you know what I mean. :)

Malcolm Gladwell's "Blink" is a book that prizes System 1 thinking over System 2. It was written before Kahneman's book and I'm guessing Gladwell wouldn't have been as biased toward System 1 if he were to write it now. But if you are interested in seeing some fun ways that System 1 can sometimes be "smarter" (or certainly quicker) than System 2, Blink is a pretty easy read.

Thanks so much for the recommendation! And yes, System 1 is definitely very good at what it does, it gets a bad rap, but it's pretty amazing!
